Lighting the Way

On this day in 1789 Congress approved an Act for the establishment and support of lighthouse, beacons, boys and public piers. In 1989 National Lighthouse Day was established and called for lighthouse grounds where feasible to be open to the public. The purpose of this holiday is to recognize the important role lighthouse have played in the history of this country and to encourage restoration and preservation on lighthouses today. |
