Crab Copper Two Tone Coin Cut Out Pendant

Guernsey Penny "Crab" Copper Two Tone Coin Necklace

This penny was originally created as local currency in the Bailiwick of Guernsey, a small island off the couast of France that was controlled by The British Crown. They minted their own money from 1822 to 1836. This Crab Coin Cut Out Pendant was created from a Guernsey penny that has been layered in gold and silver, then cut out with a very fine jewelers saw.

I have chosen this necklace in honor of the Annual Blessing of the Fleet in Bayou La Batre, Alabama. (Missed it again, darn it!) The shrimp boats are decorated with flags and religious symbols and  blessed by the local Archbishop. Then we eat!

"God bless your going out and coming in."

Double Decker Strawberry Moon Pies

Double Decker Strawberry Moon Pies

It isn't truly Mardi Gras until you've had a Moon Pie! Not a cookie, not a cake, it's a marshmallow "sandwich". This one is strawberry coated, but they also come in banana (a classic), vanilla, lemon, chocolate (my favorite) and orange.

The proper southern way to eat a Moon Pie is to pair it with an RC Cola.

Throw me something, mister!

Celebrate Mardi Gras with a King Cake

King Caek Mix

Today is Mardi Gras! Celebrate 'New Orleans style' with a King Cake. The maker of each King Cake hides a token in the cake after it is baked. It can be a dried bean or a tiny plastic "baby". Whoever finds the token gets good luck the following year and has to provide the King Cake at the next party.

If you were lucky enough to get the "baby" but don't have a clue how to make a King Cake, take heart - King Arthur Flour has created a complete King Cake Mix, inlcuding the yeast dough, filling and icing mix with colored sprinkles. (You have to get your own "baby".)

Chocolate Pecan Pie - Oh My!

Chocolate Pecan Pie Here in the south, it just isn't a holiday without pecan pie. This one has a different twist - chocolate! Yes, this Chocolate Pecan Pie is made with sweet butter, whole eggs, brown sugar and crisp Southern pecans – with a scoop of chocolate chips for good measure. Then they drizzle more chocolate on top! Heaven on a plate!

An Old Southern Tradition - the Mint Julep

Monogrammed Mint Julep Cup

Another great southern tradition is the Mint Julep Cup. It is silver plated and can be monongrammed with initials. (Interlocking initials are for the ladies, dear.)  We didn't invent this cup style, but we have carried it on.

Mint Julep

2 cups granulated sugar
2 cups water (branch water is ideal)
Fresh Mint
Crushed Ice
Kentucky Bourbon (2 ounces per serving)

Today is Mint Julep Day. Bring your glass and meet me on the veranda!

Southern Pecan Coffee

Southern Pecan Coffee

This Signature Southern Pecan Coffee is said to taste just like Southern hospitality. If that is true then I had better buy stock in Green Mountain Coffee, because I would hate for all that tradition to fade away.

With a hint of praline, it's a hit any time of the day. (Hmm, maybe with a splash of bourbon and a slice of that Bourbon Pecan Tart... stunning!)

Two Great Southern Favorites in One Place - Pie!

Bourbon Pecan Tart

What Pecan Pie IS - A traditional southern dessert that is full of fresh, whole pecans and corn syrup.

What Pecan Pie is NOT - A 3 inch thick pile of sweet with a microscopic layer of little tiny pecan chips floating on top.

What this Bourbon Pecan Tart IS - An awesome update to a long standing tradition with the added bounus of another great southern tradition, Bourbon!

Since this is made by Gevalia, I'm sure you can find a coffee that is pefect for this dessert. Keep this one away from the kiddies!
